This month’s client of the month is Andy Cuppia. Andy is the owner of EVOS Sandy Springs and Midtown (a very cool resturant with a cool concept, of which I talk about all the time). With newborns (kids and businesses), he is a very busy guy dealing with a lot of stress. However, he manages to make his heath and fitness a priority. Here is what he has to say:

“So you wanna workout. But you pretty much hate the gym because there is always someone “looking” at you and judging your every move. Hey, just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.

The solution – talk to Kelly at Fitness Together. I’ve been going to this place for about 8 months now and absolutely love it. I’ve had one-on-one training in a gym setting before, but never in a private studio. It’s really nice to have the space all to yourself. The workouts last about an hour, but you can shower and change at the studio, so it is really easy to fit in during a hectic day.

The trainers – top notch. Kelly and his team aren’t some recent college graduates whose hobby is fitness and needed a job. These guys (and gal) have gone through extensive training and can talk you to death about the science behind the fitness… In short, they really know what they are talking about. In addition to being knowledgeable, they are very personable. Sorry, you aren’t going to get a Gillian Michaels type yelling at you and jumping on your back while you jump into a tire. But you will get someone who actually cares about your progress and will give you as much as you can (and should) handle. Don’t get me wrong. The workouts are challenging, but not in a dangerous-why-am-I-hauling-300lbs way…” Read rest of Testimonial at Yelp,

It’s competition time in Johns Creek! We needed to get everyone motivated and focused again (now that summer is coming to end) and we came up with the idea to hold our own Biggest Loser. We have 16 clients who joined and all have really seemed to have a winning mindset. This was our 2nd week and already everyone has lost weight or body fat!! One person even lost 7 lbs!

Soon, there will be team challenges (pushups or situps, etc.) and we are even thinking about doing a mountain climb towards the end. Best news yet – the overall male and female winners will get a $250 gift card to help with a new wardrobe WOOHOO! We will update on our challenge winners and give props to all the weight and fat loss.
Side note – we had such a diverse group come together that we decided to take not only weight and fat loss into consideration, but extra credit cardio done in the studio…bringing in a journal every session….and waist measurements as well. We are taking before and after pictures and we just can’t wait to see who will win. It’s Dawn’s team against Misty’s team and it’s the biggest loser who will be the biggest winner!

HERE”S WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

“As Kelly took us on the grocery store it was fun to pick up products that we would normally buy for our family and see if it got the healthy stamp of approval from Kelly. It was amazing to learn how much sodium a lot of products have. We also learned how we can have some sweet things in moderation or diluted. We found some great options for ice cream. It was a great experience. Thank you so much Kelly!”
Sasha Rionda Randall

“I learned about new foods to incorporate in my daily diet. I am always
looking for healthy grains. I tend to omit grains because I get bored of
the usual brown rice.

I did not know that Publix had sprouted bread in their freezer section.

The shopping trip made me more aware of my sodium intake. Although I do not have an issue with sodium, I am going to try and not eat fast prepared rice mixes or frozen foods. The shopping trip made me more aware of the sodium I was consuming in a day! I would love to do it again soon.”
Wendy Hovancik
Robeks Smoothies Operator

You’ve might have tried everything from taking caffeine out of your diet, to taking the television out of your room. Still, nothing works for you. You might have even tried sleeping pills, but that hardly seems like a long-term solution. However, maybe there is something you have thought about, but still haven’t tried. You know what I am talking about. It’s exercise!

Because of experience, I can tell you that the first thing you will benefit from exercise is a more sound sleep. From a scientific point of view, it has been proven that exercise greatly enhances sleep. One study at Stanford University Medical School found that with moderate intensity exercise, you can fall asleep 15 minutes faster and for 45 minutes longer.

Here are a few of the reasons why:

Increased levels of endorphins: These feel good endorphins can only be stimulated by regular exercises.

Improved oxygen to the brain: With regular exercise, your body develops the ability to carry oxygen and nutrients better.

Greater hormone and neural balance:
Many hormones, the nervous system, and other parts of your body are affected by stress, which can cause insomnia. By placing physical stress on the body, it releases and reverses many of the negative impacts of bad stress.

Decreased body fat: It is true that if you have a high body fat percentage, you are more likely not to rest well. This is because the body fat is taxing on the heart and lungs. The less body fat you have, the easier it is to breathe; therefore, less likely to develop sleep apnea.

If your excuse not to exercise is not enough time, consider this, by placing the time to do it you have more sound sleep. When you rest better, you take less time doing things that once took longer because you were not well rested.

Have you experienced more productive sleep because of exercise? Please share.

When you’re happy, your food of choice could be steak or pizza, when you’re sad it could be ice cream or cookies, and when you’re bored it could be potato chips. Food does more than fill our stomachs — it also satisfies feelings, and when you quench those feelings with comfort food when your stomach isn’t growling, that’s emotional eating.

“Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger,” says Jane Jakubczak, a registered dietitian at the University of Maryland. “Instead of the physical symptom of hunger initiating the eating, an emotion triggers the eating.”

What are the telltale signs of emotional eating, what foods are the most likely culprits when it comes to emotional eating, and how it can be overcome? Experts help WebMD find the answers.

In season now, asparagus is one of the many veggies that packs a nutritional punch without a high caloric cost. Thicker stalks mean the plant will be more tender, and more enjoyable to snap off those woody ends before cooking. This particular vegetable can be prepared in a number of ways–boiled, steamed, grilled, or roasted. Some of the nutritional benefits are as follows:

*High in folic acid–so all of you pregnant women eat up (plays a part in the prevention of neural tube defects). Approximately one cup provides over half of the recommended daily allowance.

*3 grams of filling fiber per serving. Plus, at less than 40 calories per serving, you may be tempted to “indulge” in 2 or 3 servings at a time.

*Good source of vitamins C, A, B6, and thiamin. Also, about 400 milligrams of potassium per cup (about as much as a small banana!)

Asparagus is also low in the bad things like sodium and fat, so like most other veggies–fill your plate with as much as you like. Mix up a stir fry with some other colorful in-season produce, lean meat, and brown rice and you have got a complete meal. Check out the local farmers markets for a fresh bunch (or two)!

There are 5 Facets of Wellness of which we need to be complete in our lives. Most people in the Western civilized world are lacking in not only one of these components, but nearly all of them.

What exactly are the five facets of wellness?

1. Physical wellness
2. Emotional wellness
3. Intellectual wellness
4. Social wellness
5. Spiritual wellness

Now, let’s take each one of these in order and define them:

Physical Wellness
Physical Wellness by definition is the ability to perform daily physiological demands such as walking up stairs, lifting a bag over your head, digesting food, etc. Until the post-industrial movement (i.e. working in offices), this facet of wellness came quite natural. In modern times we have to schedule it into our lifestyle. To improve this facet you must do resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, and have a good nutrition program that is always evolving and improving. Physical wellness is the foundation of improving all other facets.

Emotional Wellness
Emotional Wellness is your ability to cope with daily circumstances in an optimistic, positive, and constructive manner. Ways to improve this is to incorporate more of the physical wellness needs, meditate (possibly incorporate yoga or tai chi), taking breaks, and getting plenty of sleep. A person who is emotionally well is happy, as opposed to depressed or stressed. Once again, physical exertion is possibly the best treatment for stress.

Intellectual Wellness
Intellectual Wellness is the ability to learn and to use information to enhance the quality of daily living and optimal functioning. You can improve your intellectual wellness by reading, doing crossword puzzles, or listening to audio learning programs. When you’re intellectually well, you are informed and able to carry objective conversations. Key word here is, objective conversations. If you’re quick to become defensive, you become argumentative. To be intellectually well, you must be true to who you are and be confident.

Social Wellness
Social Wellness is your ability to establish positive relationships and be interactive in social situations such as a party, ball game, or family outing. To improve social wellness you can have lunch with some friends or go to a baseball game. When you’re social, you’re less likely to feel lonely. However, you are only alone if you allow yourself to be. Sometimes, you need your space. However, you should never be recluse. Choosing friends with healthy behaviors is also ideal.

Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual Wellness is the ability to establish values and act on a belief that there is a force greater than that of humankind. Ways to become more spiritual are to become more involved in your preexisting faith. Praying or meditating is the foundation of spirituality. Studies have even proven that those who believe in something greater are happier individuals. Science is even showing that certain centers of the brain are accentuated while in prayer or meditation. Those who are spiritual feel more complete as opposed to incomplete.

Reflection
At the end of the day, you must reflect on what facet of your life you must spend more time developing. No one is perfect, therefore, we all have something of which we need to improve. This requires that you park your ego and pride aside. Allow yourself to become a consummate learner and you can achieve true success in life.
